Maths
Our Intent for Maths
At St Nicholas, our intent for mathematics is to teach a rich, balanced and progressive curriculum using maths to reason, problem solve and develop fluent conceptual understanding in each area.
Following White Rose Maths learning scheme, we use a mastery approach to maths teaching that suggests:
- Putting numbers first as confidence with number is the first step to competency in the curriculum as a whole;
- Putting depth before breadth as via reinforcing the knowledge again and again students achieve mastery;
- Encouraging collaboration and using the advantage of mixed year group classes where students can share knowledge and learn from peers by supporting each other and together progressing through the scheme;
- Focuses on fluency, reasoning and problem solving: it gives children the skills they need in everyday life.
A concrete →pictorial → abstract approach provides children with a clear structure in which they can develop their depth of understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim to ensure that mathematics is a high-profile subject, which children view positively and with a ‘Can do’ attitude.
Enrichment Opportunities
Enrichment opportunities include more challenging tasks in every lesson such as open-ended problems, word problems, collaborative problem-solving, participation in Maths competitions such as HFL Maths Challenge, First Maths Challenge.

Curriculum Outline
Maths units are taught in a two year rolling cycle due to the mixed aged class structure. For each cycle (A or B) and year group, the scheme of learning provides separate worksheets and lesson plans.
