English
Our Intent for English
The aim of English teaching at St. Nicholas Primary School is to develop children’s ability to listen, speak, read and write for a wide range of purposes, including the communication of their ideas, views and feelings. Children are enabled to express themselves creatively and imaginatively as they become enthusiastic and critical readers of stories, poetry and drama, as well as of non-fiction and media texts. Children gain an understanding of how language works by looking at its patterns, structures and origins. Children use their knowledge, skills and understanding in speaking and writing across a range of different situations.
Enrichment Opportunities
Trip to the local library; trip to the Roald Dahl Museum; Eric Morecombe Centre to watch There's a Monster in my Show; Young Writers Competition: Family Portraits; Town Library librarian leads reading worship; Poetry recital to parents; Class Assemblies; Reading in church (public reading and speaking).
Phonics
In Reception and Year 1, we use the phonics scheme 'Rocket Phonics'. During our daily phonics lessons, we provide exciting opportunities for children to learn a new sound by playing games, reading stories and sorting activities. Reading books linked to the taught sound are sent home to enable children to practice.
