School Dinners

St Nicholas School is proud of offering tasty, hot meals throughout the year at midday to our pupils. We have a great team in our dining hall (the Church Hall) who cook and supervise our lunchtimes. Lunch inside is followed by a supervised playtime. Pupils who bring a packed lunch may at times "picnic" outside in the playground if weather allows.

School lunches can be provided for pupils or they can bring in a packed lunch from home. A school lunch is free for pupils in Reception but from Year 1 needs to be paid for. If parents have any difficulty making this payment they should contact the Headteacher and provision for a free school meal can be made. Every day the lunch choice includes a hot meat dish, a hot vegetarian dish or a filled jacket potato. These choices must be made in advance when the meals are paid for using an on-line system. This system is not run by the school but enables us to each day pass the choices to the school kitchen to enable pupils to have their chosen meal ready for them. If a parent has not completed the choice or made payment for that day, it is possible that a meal will not be available for the pupil.

  • The cost of a school meal is £3.20 per day for children in KS2.

If you're eligible for free school meals due to low income, you can also get vouchers from your school for the half term break. Families can choose to use these supermarket vouchers for food and essentials like blankets, bedding and warm clothing. You can use following link to check if you may be entitled to claim free school meals https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/schools-and-education/at-school/free-school-meals/free-school-meals.aspx

As a school we reinforce to our pupils in Science lessons and in Personal, Social and Health Education lessons, the need to eat healthily. We ask that there are no chocolate or sweets in any packed lunch boxes. A biscuit or cake is acceptable as a form of dessert.

On no account should any items containing peanuts or nuts be brought into school in a packed lunch, or at any time, as pupils with nut allergies will be put at severe risk from proximity to nuts.
